Meeting Jack Welch - by Josephine Nguyen : What can I say about this? I met Jack Welch, I think when I look back 20 years from now this will definitely be one of the turning point in my life. Josephine and I went to the LA Times Book Festival on UCLA campus on April 24 2005. According to Jo, even though she have seen me giving speech to a 400 people audience, speaking at national conference, acting on stage for Culture Night or talking and leading bunch of meetings and basically always comfortable with large audience, this is her first time seeing me being so anxious and nervous. Jack Welch has and is my ultimate role model. His management style, his leadership, his candor and honesty, his "either work your butt off or get out the way" attitude and no bullshit straight from the gut philosphy is something that I am extremely appreciating. All the things I do, all the projects I chaired, I tried my best to learned and implement it with Jack Welch philosophy. I was able to get very good seating for his talk (2nd row baby !), was able to ask him a question during the Q&A session (my question: "How would you implement differentiation, Six Sigma, foster honesty and candor and inspire your staff given that you work in a nonprofit organization where concrete incentive; monetary or otherwise, is limited or virtually nonexistence? and what kind of adjustment should you make to these process to make them go smoother?"). Also got my book signed and shook his hand, along with getting some pictures. Thanks Jo for being there to take these pictures, I like these pictures so very very much.

One quick note: If you don't know who Jack Welch is, here is a short info-Jack Welch was a former CEO of General Electric, he was the youngest person that was named CEO of GE to this date, turning GE from a roughly 20 billions dollars in revenues company into a 500 billion dollars in market capitalization (as of 2005). He has a PhD in chemical engineering and started to work for GE as an engineer in Plastic and he was name CEO simply for working his tail off and producing great result and number. He has written couple books on management, the one i'm currently reading is "Winning-by Jack Welch and Suzy Welch". Do buy it, it probably will be one of the best management book you'll come accross, all profit will go toward helping inner city school kids. For more info just go Google it. And yes I do think Google is the greatest human invention to date.

Here is a short article that Business Week wrote about him in 1998. It's old, but I like it.
